Project Spotlight: The Standard at Columbia

The Standard at Columbia is a beautiful University of South Carolina off-campus student housing development. Located at 1401 Assembly Street in the heart of downtown Columbia, South Carolina, this impressive new construction encompasses nearly 443,000 square feet and offers a modern, vibrant living space designed to enhance the student experience. Designed by Lamar Johnson Collaborative, the project’s architecture combines contemporary aesthetics with functional design made to the needs of a collegiate lifestyle.

A standout feature of The Standard at Columbia is its continuous window wall system, which creates an expansive visual connection between interior spaces and the surrounding city. A window wall system is a type of building envelope system where large expanses of glass are installed between floor slabs. Unlike curtain wall systems, which are attached to the exterior of the building’s structure and span multiple floors, window wall systems are installed within the structural framework, typically spanning from the floor slab below to the ceiling or floor slab above.

Eastern Glass and Aluminum of Norcross, Georgia, managed the installation of the window wall system. To ensure optimal weather sealing, Pecora 895NST structural silicone glazing and weatherproofing sealant was applied. This sealant was chosen for its proven performance and innovative Non-Staining Technology, which prevents free-silicone-fluid molecules from migrating into substrates and causing unsightly stains. The colors Anodized Aluminum and Classic Bronze were selected to complement the building’s aesthetic and surroundings.

After Eastern Glass and Aluminum faced an unexpected departure, the project management team, led by Mary Wexel, took over to maintain the project’s momentum and quality standards. Mary and her team demonstrated unwavering dedication to excellence and collaboration, playing a pivotal role in completing their scope of work on time. This project also marked the company’s first submission to the prestigious ABC Gala. Recognized for its scale, execution, and commitment to overcoming challenges—including material delays—this project exemplified excellence in construction. A letter of recommendation from Clayco, the General Contractor, highlighted the team’s ability to deliver exceptional results on time and within budget.

The successful completion of The Standard at Columbia has set a benchmark for future projects, showcasing the possibilities of modern student housing development.
