The Allianz Field is a soccer-focused stadium located in St. Paul, Minnesota and home to the Minnesota United FC. Officially opened in April 2019, the stadium houses 19,400 seats with future plans for an expansion of 24,474 in the works. Populous Architects was chosen because of their expertise in venue design. They are known in the industry as the architects who design spaces “where people love to be together.” They’ve stated, “Allianz Field boasts the latest in amenities and technology while also being sustainably-designed to minimize environmental impact and energy usage.” Plans for the new stadium were drawn up and “the rich with community history” 35-acre St. Paul bus barn site was chosen as the location for the venue. Mortenson Construction was hired as the general contractor, and broke ground in December 2016. By September 2017, major construction began at the site.
With its complex design and need for sealant tolerance at stadium armatures, the project required a sealant with excellent adhesion and elasticity. Pecora Corporation’s innovative 890NST non-staining ultra-low modulus silicone sealant was chosen for the project. The 890NST was used to seal the louver band to the metal penal and board formed concrete at the perimeter of the entire stadium. According to The Architect’s Newspaper, “the enclosure system of the stadium consists of three interconnected layers: the exterior skin of PTFE-laminated fabric, a secondary back system of steel driver pipes and armatures, and a circular colonnade of steel columns.” The 890NST product was also applied to the structural drive tubes in order to seal the panel and allow for armature movement.
Pecora’s 890NST is the first installment of the industry’s first complete line of non-staining silicone sealants. The non-staining properties effectively eliminate the possibility of staining and residue rundown while increasing adhesion and reducing dirt pick-up. The 890NST was designed to perform exceptionally well under dynamic conditions due to is ultra-low modulus and high extension/compression recovery properties. This stadium will endure harsh weather conditions such as rain, sleet, snow, sunlight, and/or ultraviolet rays which have very little effect on the ultimate performance of this product, even after years of exposure. This product was chosen because of its impeccable reputation as a tenaciously bonded sealant to various metals, performance during unpredictable weather, and non-staining properties. The standard colors of Limestone and Charcoal Gray were chosen for the silicone sealant application.
In order to provide complete protection of the stadium, sealant installers for the project, Division V, applied Pecora BC-158 to the metal panel overlaps as well as the subroof below the stadium. BC-158 is a one-part gun grade butyl rubber sealant that provides a durable long-lasting seal between various substrates. Butyl rubber is routinely used in lap joints of metal roofing applications. It is a multipurpose solution and has a long history of use in roofing applications due to its inherent durability. Because of its resilience and ability to be applied between similar and dissimilar substrates, the BC-158 was the perfect solution. The standard color of Black was chosen for the butyl sealant application.
The stadium officially opened on April 13, 2019. We at Pecora are proud to provide peace of mind to our customers, when delivering quality and long-lasting construction sealants.
