Kauffman Center of Performing Arts – Kansas City, MO

Back to Projects

The arts are in the spotlight in Kansas City. With the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, Kansas City will experience a change in its skyline as well as a change to the musical experience that can be expected by both artists and audiences in the region. The concept for the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts began with civic leader and philanthropist Muriel McBrien Kauffman as early as 1994 recognizing the region's need for a quality performing arts center.

Located just blocks from the Kansas City Power & Light District, the Sprint Center, and the Crossroads neighborhood, The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts is built on a 13 acre lot at the heart of Kansas City's revitalized downtown. The new center is a nearly 285,000 square-foot facility with two performance venues: the 1,800-seat Muriel Kauffman Theatre and the 1,600-seat Helzberg Hall. The two theatres will be the new home for the Kansas City Symphony, the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, and the Kansas City Ballet.

The $413 million center was designed by Moshe Safdie & Associates, dual resident of Tel Aviv and Boston, with BNIM Architects of Kansas City, MO selected to serve as the Executive Architect. The design included shell-like forms clad in silvery stainless steel while the entire front is composed of glass revealing the interior. The technical requirements and exacting standards required of a facility like the Kauffman Center make it one of the most complex structures in the world to design and build.

Pecora's 890NST Silicone sealant was chosen to protect this important part of Kansas City's future due to the high quality of the sealant and the relationships between Pecora's mid-western sales rep Keith Waters, the sealant contractor, S&W Waterproofing of Kansas City, MO and the sealant distributor, Carter Waters of Kansas City, MO. S&W Waterproofing expressed the need to have a qualified and experienced sealant rep readily available from project start to completion. The fact that Keith has been the Pecora in Kansas City for over 10 years and has earned the confidence of Carter Waters over the years was instrumental in their choice of Pecora over the competition. Over 800 gallons of 890NST Non-Staining Silicone was applied to stainless steel, precast concrete and aluminum window frames.

The Kauffman Center, which opened in Fall of 2011, is counted among the finest performing arts centers in the country as well as an architectural icon for Kansas City and valuable asset to the downtown economy.
