Approved Joint Sealants for Use Under Polyurethane-Based Traffic Coating Systems
Elastomeric, multi-laminate, polyurethane-based traffic coating systems, such as the Pecora-Deck 800 Series and HB1000 High Build System, are commonly installed over concrete and plywood structures to protect wearing surfaces from the elements as well as vehicular and/or pedestrian traffic. Pecora-Deck systems reduce concrete deterioration from freeze-thaw damage, chloride-induced corrosion and cement paste deterioration. These concrete and plywood substrates typically include expansion, control, and butt joints which will require a joint sealant prior to the traffic coating installation. Pecora’s urethane sealants ensure proper sealing of traffic-bearing control joints and expansion joints in concrete or other areas subject to heavy pedestrian or vehicular traffic. Preventing water and chloride infiltration is vital to the longevity of your structure.
Pecora currently recommends several polyurethane joint sealants which are indicated below:
¹Minimum cure times may be less than the 6 hours indicated based on ambient temperature and humidity. Higher temperatures and/or humidity will reduce minimum cure times.
DynaTred has a designed Shore A Hardness of 40+ which means a medium firmness and enhanced abrasion resistance. This makes it an excellent choice for sealing joints in treads and risers, V-joints, control and expansion joints in parking decks and ramps, walkways, stadiums, and industrial warehouse floors. As it is not a self-leveling sealant, DynaTred is the choice for sealing horizontal joints where the slope may exceed five percent.
Pecora Deck-Seal is a moisture curing, single-component, non-sag polyurethane sealant that is designed to maintain an effective bond and seal between materials of similar and dissimilar surfaces, porosities and coefficients of expansion. Pecora-Deck Seal is intended for use in expansion and control joints on concrete or plywood horizontal traffic bearing surfaces.
DynaTrol II is a multi-component, high performance, non-sag, class 50 elastomeric sealant that creates a tenacious bond and watertight seal between materials of similar or dissimilar surface textures, porosities, or expansion coefficients.
Based on extensive laboratory and field testing and in addition to polyurethane joint sealants, Pecora has also approved the use of our hybrid based (STPU) joint sealants for use under polyurethane traffic coatings. Pecora recommends the following hybrid (STPU) joint sealants and cure times:
¹Sealant cure times are based on a ½”W x ½”D joint dimension at 72°F/50%RH ambient conditions. Larger joints and/or lower ambient temperatures will require additional sealant cure time. Consult Pecora Technical Services for recommendations.
*Be aware that hybrid joint sealants will require additional cure time compared to polyurethane sealants prior to the installation of the polyurethane traffic coatings.
Dynatrol I-XL Hybrid
Dynatrol® I-XL Hybrid is a one-part moisture curing STPU specifically designed as a high performance sealant for use in dynamic joints. Dynatrol® I-XL Hybrid is based on Pecora’s unique hybrid STPU. The Dynatrol® I-XL Hybrid is a one-part, moisture curing sealant that has been developed specifically for sealing dynamic joints on both porous and non-porous surfaces. It cures to a low modulus rubber with extraordinary adhesion capable of accommodating joint movement of ±50%. Dynatrol® I-XL Hybrid does not yellow, crack, or craze under long term exposure to UV light.
NR-201 is a one part self-leveling, moisture-curing, isocyanate free sealant. It has been developed specifically for sealing dynamic joints between materials of dissimilar porosity, coefficients of expansion and surface textures, as well as embedding detector loop wire for traffic signals and parking gates. This product has excellent abrasion resistance withstanding the rigors of pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
Dynaflex™ SC is a unique one-part, non-sag, tamper resistant elastomeric STPU (silyl-terminated polyurethane) joint sealant with many of the strengths of two-component security sealants but with the user-friendly ease-of-application properties of a one-component sealant. Dynaflex™ SC is designed to achieve high tensile and tear strengths, abrasion resistance and an average ultimate hardness of at least 55, yet still withstand 25% total joint movement. Dynaflex SC has a higher Shore A hardness which makes it more appropriate for traffic joints, but its movement capability is limited.
Field or laboratory adhesion testing on representative substrates is always recommended to ensure proper field performance of the installed joint sealant.
