Pickleball is Making a Comeback!

According to Ad Age magazine, Pickleball is making a comeback, but it is no longer your grandfather’s sport. We are talking tournaments, paid sponsorships, and teams owned by famous people and organizations. “About 4.8 million Americas were playing Pickleball at least a handful of times annually by the end of 2021 – a 39% increase from 2019, according to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association. The average age of those players has also skewed younger, dropping from 41 to 2020 to roughly 38 in 2021, with half of 2021’s new pickleball participants under the age of 35.” (Follett, 2022, 18). Officially, Pickleball is back, and it is back in full force.

Luckily for our readers with the influx in popularity, property owners who operate hotels, residential complexes, personal residences, etc. can rest easy knowing Pecora has the products needed to create and coat a pickleball court of their very own. Pecora offers a pool deck and tennis court system, which can also be applied to a pickleball court, in both our 800 Series and HB1000 deck coating systems.

Recently, owners of a residence in Fort Myers, Florida were looking for a robust deck coating system to coat their driveway for a new pickleball court. The project consisted of an 18,000 sq ft area dedicated to the new court. Our Pecora-Deck 800 Series System was selected and applied in four coats: 808 Epoxy Primer, 802 Base Coat, 804 Intermediate Coat, and 806 Top Coat and 806 Field Tintable Top Coat. In addition to resilience, the ability to provide custom color matching along with field tintable top coat options was a deciding factor for the owners in choosing Pecora. Typically, these courts are color coated in a combination of blue, green, and white. For this project, the custom colors Adriatic Sea and Pistachio were developed per the customer’s request by our color matching department.

Both of these Pecora-Deck coating systems deliver resilient protection against the elements and traffic, whether it’s for maintenance, restoration, or new construction. Surfaces that are prone to wear – such as concrete or plywood – are shielded from damage caused by vehicular and pedestrian traffic abrasion and the destructive forces of sun, water, temperature shifts, chlorides, and corrosive chemicals.

The decision to choose between the 800 Series or HB1000 Pool Deck and Tennis Court Systems is solely based on the preference of return to service. Pecora-Deck 800 Series is a single-component fluid-applied, polyurethane multi-coat system that provides abrasion and wear protection and defends against UV, airborne chlorides, and freeze-thaw damage. Pecora-Deck HB1000 is a two-component fluid-applied polyurethane multi- or single-coat system that is a fast cure, low to no odor, high-mil application with no off-gassing. When a waterproofing is not needed, a single coat application of HB1000 will provide the appearance and durability needed for your pickle ball court application. Both are durable and incredibly resistant systems, but the main difference is that the HB1000 is fast curing and can be applied in a single coat.

So, the next time you are working on developing space for a hotel, residential complex, or even your own home, and a pickleball court is a must have, look to Pecora for assistance. We have the knowledge and products needed in order to coat your pickleball court.
